VoIP 9-1-1 Service
Important Notice Regarding 9-1-1 Emergency Services
Roblin Tech Services Inc. provides Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone service. VoIP 9-1-1 service differs from traditional 9-1-1 service in important ways. Please read the following carefully.
How your 9-1-1 call is handled
With traditional phone service, your 9-1-1 call is sent directly to the nearest emergency response centre. With VoIP service, your call is forwarded to a third-party service provider that routes it, automatically or manually, to the emergency response centre. That centre may not receive your name, address or telephone number. You must immediately tell the operator your location and contact details every time you call 9-1-1.
Service Limitations
-
Power outages: VoIP 9-1-1 service will not function during a power failure unless you have an independent power source (such as a UPS battery backup) for both your internet modem and ATA/phone adapter.
-
Internet outages: VoIP 9-1-1 will not function if your internet connection is unavailable for any reason.
-
Account suspension: VoIP 9-1-1 will not function if your service is suspended or disconnected, including for non-payment.
-
Connection delays: Because of network congestion or other technical factors, a 9-1-1 call may produce a busy signal or take longer to connect than a traditional 9-1-1 call.
-
Location accuracy: Unlike traditional telephone service, your physical location is not automatically transmitted to 9-1-1 dispatchers. The address on file with Roblin Tech Services Inc. will be provided to emergency services. It is your responsibility to keep this address current and accurate.
-
Nomadic use: If you use your VoIP service from a location other than your registered address, emergency services will be dispatched to your registered address, not your actual location.
During a 9-1-1 call
Do not hang up until the dispatcher tells you to. If your call is disconnected, call back immediately. If your equipment has been reset after a power or internet outage, it may need to be reconfigured before 9-1-1 calling works again.
Keep an alternative available
Because VoIP service depends on power, internet connectivity and an active account, we recommend keeping an alternative means of calling 9-1-1, such as a mobile telephone.
Your Responsibility
You must keep your 9-1-1 service address up to date at all times. To update your address, visit roblintech.ca/911. Failure to maintain an accurate address may result in emergency services being dispatched to the wrong location.
You must also inform everyone in your household, and anyone else who may use your VoIP service, of the nature and limitations of 9-1-1 calling described on this page.
If you are not comfortable with these limitations, we recommend you consider an alternative means of accessing traditional 9-1-1 emergency services.
Telephone numbers are provided by Les.Net (1996) Inc., Winnipeg, MB.
Limitations of Liability
Roblin Tech Services Inc. is not liable for any damages, losses, costs, or claims arising from the failure or outage of VoIP 9-1-1 service, including but not limited to: failure to reach emergency services, dispatch to an incorrect address due to outdated customer information, or service interruption due to power or internet failure. By subscribing to Roblin Tech Services Inc.'s VoIP service, you acknowledge and accept these limitations.
